When games first entered the 3D realm, it was a big deal and designers are still trying to find the best way to use this dimension to enhance games like in Mahjongg Dimensions. Even if you’ve never played Mahjong, you’ve likely seen it or heard it being referenced somewhere. In many ways, it’s like a card game that uses tiles instead of cards. Once you get used to the symbols, gameplay can be quite smooth. It’s also a game that can work quite well for you trying to beat the game as expertly as you can but is also commonly played in a group setting.
From afar, Mahjong can seem like a chill game but solo play often incorporates a timer to step up the challenge. This version of the game is presented in more of a puzzle context to make it feel more like a video game. It’s also quite pleasing to look at with all the solid and smooth shapes and nice symbols. It may be intimidating at first, but as you start to make progress, you can enter into a sort of rhythm as you start to spot moves more consistently. It becomes about setting your personal best.
Mahjongg Dimensions has the core rules of Mahjong and is controlled with the mouse and keyboard. You use the cursor to navigate over the different pieces and then click the left mouse button to select them. You click the arrows on the screen to rotate the pieces or use the Arrow Keys/WASD to do so. The pieces are cubes and are arranged in a large 3D cube.
As with traditional Mahjong, your goal is to remove pieces by making matches until all of the pieces have been removed. You have a time limit of over three minutes to clear as many cubes as possible. There are no special pieces with the only rule being that you can only match pieces with the same symbol and that aren’t blocked on both sides by other pieces. You can rotate the cube which allows you to match pieces that are on opposite sides of the cube. There’s an icon tracker in the top right corner next to the cube so that you can keep track of what you’ve selected. The game ends once the timer runs out, but you can click the Reshuffle button at the top to reset the cube arrangement if you’d like.
The main thing to remember is that you’re working with 3D space, you’re not trying to make your way through layers. If you see a free piece on one side, rotate the cube to see if there’s another on the other side. The more matches you make, the more pieces you’ll free up for easier matching.
Despite it being Mahjong and being on numerous online platforms, this version of the game is purely single-player.
From the design and the concept, this game is put into the Puzzle and Mahjong Games categories. Other games in these categories include Robot Assembly, 2048, Monsterjong, and Mahjong Alchemy.
